Here is David, telling you in his own words why he set up Funding Focus.
“My journey of discovery started at an event in the spring of 2019, where I spoke about fundraising for small businesses. After my talk, a woman asked me why so little funding went to female entrepreneurs. I didn’t know the answer and promised to find out. I did, and I was shocked. The last 2 years have led to some incredible discoveries about the uneven playing field that female and diverse entrepreneurs face when raising capital. As a result of what I found out, I have now committed to do everything I can to level that playing field, starting with the inaugural Funding Focus Conference at the London Stock Exchange on 25 November 2019. In October 2020 I gave a TEDx talk entitled “The Fight for Fairer Funding” which tells you the full story of what I am doing about this grave injustice, including raising awareness of this issue to investors, governments and NGOs worldwide. The 2nd Annual Funding Focus Conference was held online on 25 November 2020, with participants from as far west as San Francisco, USA, as far east as Cebu, Philippines
and as far south as Cape Town, South Africa. Funding Focus Xplore was born out of the feedback
from participants at those events.”
Here are a couple of statistics that show the stark reality that female entrepreneurs face, and
our research shows that it’s the same story for diverse male entrepreneurs.
Looking at all venture capital deals in the UK in 2017, researchers for the British Business Bank found tremendous inequality
between the number of pitch decks submitted and the share of funds received.
According to data published by Pitchbook, in the 3rd Quarter of 2020, venture capital invested in the USA into female-led
businesses fell to a 3-year low, down by 48% compared with Q2 and back to the level it was in 2017.
