An Autumn Analysis

15 October 2021 |

As you may have seen on our recent social media posts, we are preparing for our 3rd annual Annual Conference on the 23rd November (2:00PM – 6:00PM, GMT). Make sure to register now and join my team and an exciting line-up of guest speakers who will share their thoughts on fundraising and finance in 2021 and onwards! Link is at the end of this article.

During the planning of this event, I reflected on the nature of business, how things have changed so quickly, how they are continuing to change as I type and will continue to do so rapidly in the coming years. I began to reflect how insightful this year has been yet I still feel distraught with the world still in disarray due to Covid-19…. and as for the UK in particular – petrol shortages and fierce climate protests continue to keep the nation on its edge.

On a lighter note, an interesting fact I discovered recently is that UK job vacancies are at record high while wages have started to pick up. [1] It goes to show that even in the worst of times you can rely on two things: innovation and determination. UK growth was up by 5.5% amid higher NHS spending and exports rose after shrinking by 1.4% in the first three months of the year! [3] Meanwhile, the UK social impact investment market reached a record £6.4 billion in 2021 [4] There is a feeling that the cloud that has gripped our world so tightly is slowly and finally starting to evaporate, international markets have also seen significant increases so one question I propose is: When is it time to say things are back to “normal”? Or what could be called the “new-normal”?

Are you a business owner struggling to adjust to the new requirements brought upon by Covid? Are you a student still learning in university? Are you just someone who is scrolling and seeking golden opportunities that could help you grow? Not just as a business-person, but as an individual. I created Funding Focus with many aims, one of the most important being to level the uneven playing field between men, women and other under-represented groups. Today, we as a team at Funding Focus look to build a diverse community of entrepreneurs who can not only share their experiences in the fundraising world but also anything else.

“If a company can transition from simply delivering a product to building a community, it can unlock extraordinary competitive advantage and both create and support a superior business model”

– Harvard Business Review [2]
